It’s amazing how much a degree in video art allows you to justify the lack of any formal filmic aesthetics…
Any video that I shoot and upload for Before the Temple in Ruins will be of a location that I have been before, made a memory of…a place that I will never go again. Once I shoot the video and leave the location, that’s the last time I will be there, I will consciously avoid making any new memory of the place.
With the invention of the video camera we created a filter for ourselves and reality, we don’t need to remember the experience of being there, we have an actual “physical” memory of it…
Before I head off to grad school in a year or so, wherever that may take me, I’ll be cataloging many of the places that I’ve been in my life, small memories, large memories, life changing moments…and once I’m done shooting…I’m done with that place for the rest of my life, I will not allow myself to go there again…
So over the weekend, with Becky, I experienced France Lake, in Kenton, OH for the last time…which I had experienced with Kent Clements over 2 years ago, when I photographed a pair of silos that are tucked away in some woods behind a chemical plant…
